This blog, built and written by my own hands with only occasional assistance from my brain, was exactly one year old yesterday. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of pure emotion, I’m sure you’ll agree!

During that time, I have steadily built the readership of the blog from a mere fourteen to a massive fifteen readers, including dear Robin, who has posted a commendable 48 comments when he should really have been editing a motoring website. So thank you to him, to Rev Stan and my other regular readers.

I thought you might be interested to see the most popular search terms that have brought people to the blog during the last year. By far the most popular search term is “Nigella Lawson”, or (often mis-spelt) variations thereof, whose comely figure has driven more than 3,000 hits to the site. This is clearly caused by Google images. Until recently, if you typed in “Nigella Lawson”, this site (specifically a post from last September) was the fourth result – although it seems to have vanished in recent weeks, for some reason.

The rest appears to be a mix of Jamie Hewlett enthusiasts, JJ Abrams geeks, fans of North West Tonight and people looking for sexual kicks. The full top 20 is below with occasional comments in brackets.

Anyway, here’s to another year full of joy and excitement. And erotic pleasure, natch.

Top 20 search terms bringing visitors to Words Dept. 2007-2008

1. Nigella Lawson/Nigella/Nigela/”Nigella Lawson fat”

2. Jamie Hewlett/Monkey drawings/Chinese monkey drawings

3. Spice Girls

4. Slosho

5. Hustler TV (hmmm…)

6. Tricia Penrose

7. Shannon Matthews

8. Jonathan Wilkes

9. Jeremy Darroch (he’s the boss of Sky telly)

10. What is the credit crunch? (a popular post with GCSE students and FT hacks)

11. Ranvir Singh

12. Gregg Wallace spanking

13. Charles Saatchi

I watched Nigella Lawson on the telly earlier tonight. It was pretty funny, the way she kept going on about how busy and stressed out she is. Well, it must be really tough presenting TV programmes and writing the odd recipe book for a living. Especially when your husband is the multimillionaire art collector Charles Saatchi (sample quote: “I think it’s fair to say I don’t ever think about money, so obviously in that sense I’m fantastically rich.”) Those kids looked like a real handful as well, what with their impish tendency to sit in bed reading a book before the babysitter even turns up. How does she cope?

Anyway, the solution to all this awful rushing around, according to Nidgey, is to cook very quick meals. Some of these were sort of middle-class fodder you might expect – pork chops in a cider sauce with gnocchi, roast poussin with sweet potatoes, etc – but then things rapidly degenerated.

After serving her mate a meal comprising deep fried squid and half a jar of mayonnaise, Nige then made something involving stale croissants (they have to be stale) drowned in sugar, eggs, cream and bourbon. She devoured this, apparently as a main course, and was then filmed supposedly sneaking to the fridge for a midnight snack, which involved pouring cream on top of the soggy pastry mess, before shoving it into her grinning mouth. She does like to grin. A lot.

I suppose it makes a change from the holier-than-thou crowd led by Jamie Oliver and I must confess I’m wondering what delights will be served up next week. A salt and vinegar crisp sandwich seems likely (perhaps with a week-old Kraft cheese slice between the margerine and the crisps). Or how about four packets of Maltesers, mashed up, melted in the microwave and served on top of – I don’t know – a jam doughnut? And I do hope we get to see that classic British dish: naan bread with a Tikka Masala Pot Noodle tipped on top of it.

Mmm. Naan.
