Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen Tour de France commentary genius

Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are my favourite commentators ever. As it’s July, I’m enjoying their voiceovers on the Tour de France coverage on ITV4 almost as much as the cycling itself. Unlike many commentary double-acts, the sporting pundit (Paul) seems to do as much talking as the broadcast journalist (Phil). Put them together and something quite magical occurs.

In celebration, here is a clip from the 2003 Tour, in which Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich are battling up a mountain. Listen out for my favourite bits:

Paul: “His chain is off, his CHAIN IS STUCK!” (1’00)

Phil: “And I think he’s waiting!” (1’27)

Paul: “There’s a problem with his pedals!” (1’45)

Both: “Aurgrghhgggghhhousssssshhhh” (2’01)

Paul: “This is unbelievable!” (2’28)

Paul: “He’s accelerating again Phil, this is amazing!” (4’17)

Paul: “He almost lost his manhood on that crossbar a few moments ago!” (4’22)

Paul: “This is fabulous, this is unbelieveable!” (4’53)

Phil [dismissively]: “Nah, I don’t think so.” (5’25)

    Thanks Phil and Paul.
You have made a non-cyclist an avid fan of the Tour de France. Keep up the wonderful commentary on the race and especially on the magnificent countryside. You are both fantastic. Thanks once again and look forward to 2011.

IN IT TO WIN IT. It has to be that way. Stopping for someone, like what for, these are racers who train hard for this BIG EVENT. Like Phil said: Oh, the guy has a flat, we need to stop the tour and wait for him???????????? Give me a break!! Race to the finish, that is all there is..
