Spanner boy

The headline in the MEN (page 11, today) says Boy, 13, cut free from spanner. Surely it would have been easier to cut the spanner from the boy? Still, I’m no expert.

FIRE-fighters had to use a hacksaw to free a 13-year-old boy’s finger from a spanner…

The boy told doctors he had been playing with the spanner when his finger became trapped.

“Playing” with a spanner, eh? Thank God it was just his finger.

The byline isn’t Finbarr Hawtrey Saunders but the story does contain the following words and phrases:

  • Ring cutter
  • Thick spanner
  • “We were all pretty nervous because obviously we didn’t want to chop too far!”
  • Youngster’s finger
  • “We used a great deal of care and were very gentle. When we finally freed it I think we were as relieved and exhausted as he was!”

Fnarr! Fnarr!

I’m waiting for the day when my three fave M.E.N. nibs headlines get combined into one marvellous story: “Noose terror” (you guessed…) “Wedding joy” (ditto) and “Bus plunge” (happens surprisingly often, mostly in Walkden).
