I’m watching in disbelief a programme called Most Annoying TV Moments We Hate To Love on BBC3. It’s really innovative – they have lots of clips of TV shows interspersed with talking heads, most of whom you’ve never heard of – Neil “Don’t Call Me Doctor” Fox, Derek Acorah and Nikki off Big Brother are the A-list in this company – and a witty voiceover by Richard Bacon. It’s absolutely nothing like those dull list shows that Channel 4 phased out a couple of years ago. Oh, no.
After slagging off charity gigs (Live 8, Live Earth etc) the next item on the list is science fiction programmes. Ay up, I thought, surely they’re not going to slag off the BBC’s flagship sci-fi drama series Doctor Who?
Amazingly, I wasn’t disappointed. The pundits spent five minutes saying how bloody great Doctor Who is before Bacon announced, entirely seriously, that the reason it’s “annoying” is because it’s so good.
In a post-ironic statement, I suspect number one on the list will be “list shows” like this. But not before Strictly Come Dancing, DIY SOS, the Six O’ Clock News and the rest of the BBC’s schedule has been acknowledged as groundbreakingly brilliant – albeit in a slightly annoying way.
PS I know some of the Blog Awards judges are from the BBC. Can I just say that generally I love the BBC, especially its exceptional regional output.
