A bewildering choice of headline in the Manchester Evening News, which appears to use Carlsberg Special Brew as part of a punning headline in a story about the “homeless and disadvantaged” today.
Man City footballer Didi Hamann is pictured on the back page visiting a “resource centre for homeless and disadvantaged people in Stockport to help serve the drinks”. The version on the web is headlined “Didi’s Silver Service”. But the print version has a headline above the photo saying “Hamann’s Special Brew”.
Could it really be that the MEN’s subs have snuck in a mischievous and somewhat tasteless reference to the 9% super-strength lager blamed by homelessness charities for fostering alcoholism among rough sleepers and street drinkers – and popularly known as “tramp juice”?
In fairness, Didi seems to be dishing out tea rather than booze, so perhaps I’m reading too much into it.

Hello,
Yes i do feel you are reading much too much into this headline, as the Manager of The Wellspring in Stockport (the project where Mr Hamann very kindly gave his time to support) I can assure you that we have a zero tolerance to Alcohol in the project. We provide a way out for people who are addicted to Alcohol.
I think they used the headline (by the way miss quoted by yourself but i would expect nothing more from a journalist! ) Hamanns Special Brew as the picture of Didi clearly shows him making cups of tea.
More information about The Wellspring and the work that takes place can be found at http://www.thewellspring.co.uk
Thanks
Jonathan Billings

The Wellspring.
I think you should apologise Dave and make a donation…
I don’t think, reading over Dave’s entry, that he was suggesting that Didi was literally serving Special Brew to the Wellspring visitors.
Speaking as an erstwhile mischievous sub, the prospect of the deliberate double entendre does not seem completely unlikely.
