Anthony Howard Wilson, 20 February 1950-10 August 2007

Lots of people round here have been touched by the death of regional TV superstar, Factory Records supremo and all round good egg Tony Wilson last week.

I came into contact with him a couple of times. When I was at university I worked one time as a runner for the In The City music conference, which he organised. I wanted to ask him for an interview for the student paper but never plucked up the courage. I’m sure he would have done it. I remember a couple of the other teenagers working there pestered him for a written reference, which he did willingly – scrawled on the spot on headed notepaper and filled with praise.

Michael Taylor has listed ten of his memories about Tony here. Despite being a Liverpool fan, the Bruges rosette stunt amuses me greatly.

There’s also a nice tribute to his skills as a broadcaster by David Boulton here.
