Parakey: we’re all going to die.

Since Friday, I seem to keep reading stuff about something called Parakey. I can’t quite figure out what it is other than some kind of operating system that “bridges the gap between information on the web and the desktop”. No mainstream news source I’ve so far come across (and admittedly I haven’t looked very hard) has managed to explain it.

Instead, all you get is some waffle lifted from Parakey’s deliberately mysterious and slightly wanky website, such as the quote above, and a bit of backstory on Facebook, which has just bought Parakey, possibly for “some cash”.

Inherent in much writing on the subject of Parakey/Facebook is a paranoia that Facebook is somehow poised to suck the entire web into its clutches, causing the internet to crumble in on itself, or even worse, as Techcrunch speculates, enable Facebook to “become the next Microsoft”. Aiee!

The further implication is that, one way or another, we are all going to die while Parakey, whatever “it” is, simply points at us and laughs.

I, for one, am scared.
