Meanwhile in Hull…

It’s become pretty obvious today that the media has been guilty of failing to appreciate the scale of the recent floods in Hull. It’s emerged that 30,000 people had to leave their homes as a result of the flooding - far more than anywhere in South Yorkshire, where Sky and News 24 have been camped since the start of last week.

According to the Guardian, events such as the new Prime Minister taking office, as well as the car-bomb plot in London and Glasgow, have pushed it out of the news. But that doesn’t explain why places like Toll Bar in Doncaster have featured so heavily.

Why is this? Could it be that Hull, on the distant East Yorkshire coast and an hour further away from London, represents too much effort for the nation’s most intrepid reporters? Or perhaps it’s the fact that Prince Charles decided to visit Toll Bar, rather than Hull, in order to make an ass of himself in a dinghy floating on six inches of water. (Nothing like a bald man in a boat to get one’s juices flowing.)

Well, apparently not. The Guardian speculates that Hull suffered from the wrong sort of flooding to make for interesting TV pictures, whereas the “deep” water in the Don Valley made for a much sexier, more “dramatic” backdrop. Oh dear.

Screw Hull, the village two miles down the road from where we are renting a cottage a week today is several inches under water…
